White House on Lockdown After Vehicle Strikes Security Barrier

-On friday, a car struck a security barrier at the White House, according to a statement from the Secret Service.

The White House was on lockdown for about an hour after the incident, which took place near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the southeast side of the complex.

The driver of the vehicle was a 35-year-old female and was “immediately apprehended by Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers,” according to a subsequent tweet, and did not breach the security barrier. The organization added that no law-enforcement personnel were injured and no shots were fired during the incident, contrary to some tweets that suggested otherwise.

The driver was identified as a resident of La Vergne, Tennessee, and as someone the Secret Service has had previous encounters with near the White House, “resulting in numerous arrests for a variety of criminal violations.” The agency said the woman was charged Friday with numerous, unspecified criminal violations and turned over to the District of Columbia police department.

During the incident, a Washington correspondent for CNBC wrote that uniformed guards were barricading entrances usually accessible to the press, adding that he saw three Secret Service agents “running toward the residence.” A White House reporter with the Tronc media company said that he was briefly “locked” in the press office by Secret Service agents and later let out “with no immediate explanation.”

President Donald Trump was hosting Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the White House at the time. Turnbull remained at the White House as the incident was being investigated.
